Description
Advanced Manufacturing & Instrumentation Scientist
Hawaii Institute of Materials Research (HIMaR)
Position ID: 225348
The Hawaii Institute of Materials Research (HIMaR) is seeking an experienced and innovative Advanced Manufacturing & Instrumentation Scientist to lead research and operations in the area of novel materials development and additive manufacturing (AM). This position plays a central role in the Hawai‘i Initiative for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (HIAMM) and involves coordination of specialized research instrumentation, development of advanced fabrication techniques, and collaboration across a growing network of research partners.
The successful candidate will drive the development and optimization of additive manufacturing methods, with a focus on printing-based fabrication techniques for functional materials, devices, and thin films. Responsibilities include formulating custom inks for Direct Ink Writing (DIW) and other AM processes; designing advanced manufacturing workflows for producing components such as conductive circuits, catalytic coatings, and sorptive layers; and leading the operation of the HIAMM instrumentation core, including user training, safety compliance, scheduling, billing, procurement, and reporting.
In this role, the scientist will coordinate AM-related efforts across multiple projects, working closely with both internal and external collaborators. The position also includes preparation of technical and administrative reports, documentation of core facility usage and safety logs, contribution to research publications and grant proposals, and presentation of results at professional conferences and meetings. The scientist may also supervise graduate students or research assistants and is encouraged to pursue independent or collaborative research aligned with HIMaR’s mission.
