Its current research activities concentrate mainly on condensed matter physics, optical physics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, soft matter physics, and condensed matter theory and computation physics. There are 11 laboratories and 4 centers in our research system together with a strong technical support system for research. More Information about IOP can be found at www.iphy.ac.cn.
Company History
The Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was formed in 1950 by merging of the National Research Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica (established in 1928), and the Institute of Physics, National Academy of Peiping (established in 1929). After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was named the Institute of Applied Physics, CAS, and in October 1958, it adopted the current name. Thanks to the steadfast efforts of generations of scientists in the past years, IOP has become a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary research institution engaged in research on basic and applied physics, with a focus on condensed matter physics, optical physics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, soft matter physics, and condensed matter theory and computation physics. In 2003, the Ministry of Science and Technology nominated the institute as one of the first six national labs in China and gave it the title of Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics (BNLCP).
