Company History

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has major facilities on the banks of the Potomac River in southwest Washington, D.C; at the Stennis Space Center, Mississippi; and in Monterey, California. NRL was dedicated on July 2, 1923, and is the Navay and Marine Corps' only corporate laboratory, charged with the mission of conducting a broadly based, multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development.

Research is directed toward maritime application of new and improved materials; techniques; equipment; systems; ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences; and related technologies. The Navy has established NRL as its "lead laboratory" in space technology, fire research, artificial intelligence, tactical electronic warfare, and microelectronic devices.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

U.S. Radar - NRL invented, developed and installed the first operational U.S. radar, the XAF, on the battleship USS New York in 1939. The invention of radar and the development that flowed from it are among the foundations of modern military power.; Moon Radar - The iconic radar antenna atop NRL's administration building made the first precise measurement of the distance to the Moon in 1957.; Vanguard 0 The Vanguard I satellite was launched into Earth orbit on Mary 17, 1958, and achieved the highest altitude of any man-hand vehicle to that time. It orbits the Earth today as the oldest man-made satellite and will remain in orbit well into the 22nd Century.; Molecular Structure Determination - CL-20, a nitramine explosive, was synthesized by A. Nielson at China Lake, California. The first structural studies on CL-20 were performed at NRL in 1988 using direct methods developed by Drs. Jerome Karle and Herbert Hauptman, for which they won the Nobel prize in 1985. These direct methods are now used by crystallographers around the world. Deep Ocean Search - Deep ocean search technologies were developed and used by NRL as an emergency search mission to find lost submarines, and at one point, successfully locate and recover a lost H-bomb off the coast of Spain. GPS - NRL formulated the original concepts and developed the satellite prototypes for the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System, which earned NRL the coveted Collier Trophy.
